Why Afiacity Exists
In Kenya, more than 70 percent of patients interact with a pharmacy professional before they ever see a doctor. The community pharmacy is the front door of healthcare -- it is where the worried mother brings her feverish child at 9 p.m., where the chronic patient refills prescriptions month after month, and where the teenager quietly asks the questions they cannot ask anyone else.
Yet for all its importance, the pharmacy sector has been underserved. Opening a pharmacy in Nairobi means navigating the Pharmacy and Poisons Board licensing process with little guidance. Training opportunities for practising pharmacists and pharmaceutical technologists remain fragmented. And most pharmacy owners make inventory and pricing decisions on instinct rather than data.
Afiacity was founded to close that gap. We saw that the pharmacy is not just another healthcare facility -- it is the hub around which everything else revolves. The prescription originates from the clinic but is fulfilled at the counter. The hospital discharges the patient, but the pharmacy sustains them. Public health campaigns succeed or fail based on whether the pharmacy team at the community level can execute.
